Severus shivered. His house at Spinner's End was freezing, which wasn't surprising since it was December. He'd waited months for this trial and when it had finally come, the things people who testified had only praise for him. The mark against him was literally his own, the slightly faded Dark Mark on his forearm. Perhaps the Wizengamot had been tired of the whole thing, but in the end he was pronounced innocent and sent on his way.
The only place he had to go was here. Dingy, dank and cold. He cast a charm to light the fire and then went to the kitchen to make tea. There was tea, at least a year old, but it would have to do. It looked as if he'd have to walk down to the corner pub for supper. The tea steeped and he felt the rooms begin to warm.
The knocker on his door sounded three sharp raps. Severus took out his wand, if it was Rita Skeeter he'd be back in prison before supper. He peered through the tiny window. There stood Lupin dressed as a Muggle and looking quite comfortable.
He opened the door cautiously. "Lupin."
"Hello Severus, I've brought you some things." Remus answered cheerfully.
"Things?" Severus queried suspiciously.
"Food, drink, tea, clothes…"
"What's wrong with my clothes?" Severus asked indigently.
"Nothing. Might I come in Severus? It's freezing out here."
It was time for an eye roll, but Severus backed away and opened the door. "Very well." The promise of decent tea was enough.
Remus walked straight through the lounge into the kitchen. By the time Severus caught up he had already started to empty his carrier bag. Wine, bread, cheese, Firewhisky, butter, eggs, jumpers, denims, and the table kept filling up.
"Lupin, what is the meaning of this?" Severus dramatically waved his arm.
"It means you can eat, drink and wear different clothes without having to leave your house right away."
"I've been incarcerated for six months, perhaps I want to leave."
Remus shrugged. "That's up to you. I just brought things that you'd need in case you didn't want to leave right away. Or maybe you have a secret hideaway you were going to. The supplies would help there too. As for the clothing, it's nice to blend in when one is in a mostly Muggle area."
"All Muggle." Severus corrected. "What charm did you use on that bag?"
"Hermione and I worked it out before their seventh year." Remus added to the piles on the chairs.
Severus lost his train of thought as he saw steak, mushrooms, horseradish, and his beloved rosebay willowherb honey. He was salivating at the sight whether it was the food or Lupin he wasn't certain. "Do you cook as well?"
"Sure. Eating out is not something I've had the money for." Remus looked up, through his lashes.
Severus didn't know where his brain was, except perhaps in his trousers. "I'll make tea. You can find us something to make sandwiches and perhaps a sweet as well."
"You're asking me to tea, Severus?" Remus asked quietly.
"Of course. You've made this huge mess in my kitchen. We'll eat and then you can help me clean it up." It wasn't the only mess Severus was suddenly anticipating.
Remus grinned. "Very well. I did make the mess after all."
